Upcoming Course Descriptions
"Royal Radiance"
(includes 3 nights lodging, 4 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 afternoon teas, sewing room set-up and teacher fee)
This is going to be a very special retreat with Carol. We will use the Royal Radiance Quilt to learn the entire process of choosing your fabrics, cutting them efficiently, organizing your sewing and completing your quilt top. Although we are using this quilt to learn the process, throughout the week, Carol will share lots of tidbits of information to add to your enjoyment of foundation paper piecing.
"Vermont Covered Bridge Quilt"
(package includes 2 nights lodging, 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch, afternoon tea, sewing room set-up and teacher fee)
The Vermont Covered Bridge Quilt is a very special quilt designed by Mary Alice Rath for the Milk and Honey Quilters of Addison County, Vermont. Twelve of Vermont’s most picturesque covered bridges are featured along with maple leaves and Vermont’s state flower, the red clover. Designer Mary Alice has planned a wall hanging adapted from the quilt as a weekend project. A variety of techniques from foundation piecing to rushing appliqué will be covered. The wall hanging pattern is included in the price of the seminar; patterns for the complete quilt will be available at a discount.
Time is getting short, so it is important to register quickly to reserve your spot.
"Asters"
This quilt is approximately 62"x62". It's a beautiful quilt using the Dresden plate block in the center with a pieced border surrounding it. It can, of course, be expanded to make a bed sized quilt if desired. Skills to be learned: Machine appliqué using a method that makes it appear to be hand appliquéd and a more decorative method of machine appliqué will be used to appliqué the plate blocks onto the background fabric. There will be a supply kit for this class that will allow you to use the technique learned for this and other appliqué
"Hop to it with Bon Appliqué"
Jump into a delightful collection of appliqué blocks by Edyta Sitar in her charming book Hop To It. Beginning with this simple design, perfect for learning (or developing) hand applique needle turn technique, enjoy a creative process that will inspire you to stitch with confidence and pleasure. All tricks will be explored to help you achieve smooth curves, sharp points and perfect circles with tips on how to design your own block to compliment this collection. Come, relax and take the A (for anxiety!) out of appliqué.
"A Different Kind of Quilting Retreat"
Forget the bunk beds and cafeteria food! Join Quilters Newsletter columnist Alison Bolt for five days of pampering and stitching in peace and luxury with some of your new best friends! No teacher, no project, no guilt; just laugh, shop, and quilt til you wilt!
Plan your own time and choose your activities! Have a massage, mani or pedi on site! Friday, follow Alison on an afternoon shop-hop, with a dinner stop at The Bearded Frog in Shelburne, and dessert back at the inn (before the quiltathon recommences). Saturday, have your Bernina serviced and your scissors sharpened while you wait. That night, sip a glass of wine an relax while Alison regales you with her "Confessions of a Type A Quilter" talk. Savor your options and decide whether to stitch, socialize, nap or take a drive to the homemade chocolate shop! Life can be good, very good!
Quilt Retreat Includes: 4 nights lodging, 4 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 3 afternoon teas and your sewing room set-up.
"Barn Raising"
Have you ever been to a "barn raising" before? Now's your chance! Join us to create beautiful wall hangings from my patterns, The Barnyard Ladies! The weekend will be full of my own tips and shortcuts from start to finish and you will learn OR brush up on techniques of foundation paper-piercing and fusible web appliqué. All fur patterns are ideal for mixing and matching; the tops & bottoms, the flowers and even adorable 'critters', and you'll be encouraged to explore these possibilities for making a truly unique work of art! "Finish Up" will also be included in this weekend — Let me show you fast and easy ways to finish your quilt with a fusible label, the perfect hanging sleeve and a binding attached completely by machine.
"Crazy Quilting and Embellishing"
Bring a project you are working on to get ideas about completing. If you have questions about embroidery, beading, embellishing or silk ribbon embroidery, this will be the weekend to get them answered. Jane shares a variety of her quilts for inspiration and will give demonstrations throughout the weekend. You do not need to be a quilter to enjoy this special retreat. The embellishing ideas can be used on clothing, purses, pictures and other projects.
"New York Beauty Simplified"
Join Linda to learn her exciting new technique for creating New York Beauty Blocks using ONE PIN! (Yes, just one pin!) You're practically guaranteed a perfect block the first time you attempt it. Linda brings most of the quilts featured in new book "New York Beauty Simplified" so you can see how different fabrics and different layouts create different "flavors" for your quilts. Linda also shares how she auditions quilting designs for these gorgeous quilts. This is a fun and empowering class for confident beginners on up. Kit fee: $22.
Landscape Design and Beyond
Let your spirit be free and join us in making Landscapes in Cotton… Layering for Space. Landscapes from simple to advance can be created by learning to layer fabric. And then, we can play with Underwater Magic and Fantasy Fish…Join us in an artistic fun filled class.
"Ruby Red Dots and Finish It Up Clinic"

Enjoy a creative process that will inspire you to stitch with confidence and pleasure. And if you have a long neglected appliqué project, feel free to pull it out and have it be your focus. Let freezer paper, the best needles and overlays head you to appliqué success. Throughout the weekend Leslie will inspire you with her treasure trove of hand appliquéd quilts. That alone will encourage you to reach new heights in your quilting journey.

Different techniques for hand appliqué will be demonstrated along with a mini lesson on hand piecing. You can design your own “Florrie’s Posey Quilt” shown or work on your own project. An opportunity for creating a Spool Box will also be available.
But that’s not all! Friday night, Froncie will be giving her lecture, “Florrie: The Story of Florence Peto”, which sneaks a glimpse into the life of this prolific and important needleworker. As a special treat, enjoy the Peto memorabilia that Froncie has amassed over the years. This evening will truly be a journey through history.
Saturday will be the Garden Party with an English Tea and spectacular food served at 4:00 and prizes given for the best-dressed tea party costume. Remember your costume jewelry! The weekend will also include fabric and recipe exchanges, show and tell, and a wine reception!

Our Quilting Instructors
Kay Berquist
Kay has been involved in needlework most of her life, but once she found quilting, she was hooked. It is a passion! For 15 years, she has been a professional longarm quilter. She was involved as a buyer and teacher at a local quilt shop for 5 years, and continues to teach today. She is a patient teacher and enjoys helping all quilters improve their skills. Most recently, she and daughter Allison began designing bed quilts, and then smaller projects. Their design "Christmas Cabin" was published in "Quilt" Magazine in August 2009. All their designs can be seen at www.VermontQuiltDesign.com
Alison Bolt
Alison's "Right Off the Bolt" humor column has been featured in Quilters Newsletter since 2007. Her observations on the quirky side of quilting (and quilters) have also appeared in Keepsake Quilting's catalogs and the Quilting Quarterly. Last year she took her act on the road and began spinning her stories for area guilds. For material, Alison draws heavily on her past experiences such as:
holding offices on the National Quilt Association and Vermont Quilt Festival boards, serving as the Festival's show director, and heading an active, 300-member guild in MD. Alison, a devoted paper-piecer, has been quilting since 1998, but promises she is an average quilter with the same neuroses as everybody else!
Leslie Cook
A hand appliqué instructor since 1992, Leslie has taught hundreds of women to appliqué, passing on her enthusiasm for quilting and her passion for needle turn technique. Recognized for her unique sense of color and fabric choice, this award winning quilter has conducted workshops at area quilt shops and guilds as well as trunk show presentations around New England.
Jo Diggs
Jo has created appliqué landscapes for over thirty years and has been teaching art for even longer. Her multi-layered landscapes impart a sense of serenity, showing deep vistas lit by soft-colored light. The majority of her current production is matted appliqué pictures of landscapes or fish. The most recent quilts are a series of the Four Seasons: Remembered Vistas (Autumn), Many Winters, Summer in a Shade Garden and Spring.
In her classes Jo teaches the method of designing that she uses, free-cutting without using patterns. Her many years of practice at both creating her own work and teaching, ensure good outcomes for class participants. Jo is dedicated to sharing information and making her students successful.
Linda Hahn
Classes with Linda Hahn are described as "fun and empowering"
— she has a way of breaking down complex designs into non-agonizing steps. Linda is the 2009 National Quilting Association's Certified Teacher of the Year and is the author of the new bestseller from the American Quilter's Society - New York Beauty Simplified. Linda is also the author of the "Insider's Guide to Quilting Careers" (Quiltwoman.com 2009). Linda's designs can be found in many magazines including Quilt Magazine, MAchine Quilters Unlimited, Professional Quilter Magazine and others. She has designed quilts for Northcott Silk, Elizabeth's Studio, Sullivan's USA and Krenik Threads.
Jane Masenas
Jane has been doing needlework since she was five years old and this will be her sixth year with "Quilting In Vermont". When she moved to Vermont in 1975, she became part of a church group that quilted beds quilts to earn money for the church. Since 1973, Jane has been an elementary school teacher and has collaborated with school teachers and the Shelburne Museum to integrate the arts, including textile arts into the school curriculum. Her quilts have been published in Miniature Quilts magazine. To date she has had 14 of her quilts published. Her personal trunk show is not to be missed.
Sue Pritt
A seamstress since age seven, an elementary art teacher, and a graphic artist are just some of the titles that Sue has picked up along her way. In the early nineties, she added quilter to that list, and embraced it with all her energy and talent which in turn, produced award-winning art quilts. Her patterns are uniquely different from all others and she's been told that her quilts "tell a story." Sue's workshops are loads of fun, her enthusiasm is contagious, and she loves passing on all her tips and techniques to other quilters.
Froncie Hoffhine Quinn
Froncie began her quilting in Ohio where she was taught traditional hand skills. Upon moving to Vermont, Froncie became involved writing historic patterns for the Shelburne Museum, which led to also being licensed by other museums, designing historic fabrics, writing patterns for Enduring Grace, Quilts from the Shelburne Museum, being featured in various quilt magazines, and becoming acquainted with quilt historian, Florence Peto’s, family. Her latest adventure has been the creation of Posey Packets® - appliqués created from Florence’s famous Calico Garden Extraordinaire which can be seen at www.hooplapatterns.com
Froncie’s enthusiasm and passion for hand work will get you hooked!
