Upcoming Course Descriptions
"Japanese Stepping Stones - Bon Appliqué"
Gather up several of those beautiful cotton Japanese floral prints to create a lovely scroll wall hanging of hand appliquéd stepping stones as you practice needle turn technique to achieve perfect curves and smooth corners. Inspired by Kitty Pippins' book Quilting With Japanese Fabrics, each appliquéd shape will carry these stones along a graceful path, framing every Asian blossom and leaf in a simple yet stunning way, as you learn to stitch with confidence and pleasure. 2 nights lodging, 2 breakfasts, 1 lunch, afternoon tea, activity room set-up and teacher fee.
"Holiday Log Cabins"
Have you always wanted to experience the excitement of a quilting weekend? This is the weekend for you. Choose one of these festive log cabin quilts for a stunning addition to your holiday decorations. Both quilts feature log cabin blocks and you will learn a technique to make every one of those blocks perfect! Once you learn this method of cutting log cabin blocks, you’ll never go back to any other way! Thanksgiving features the maple leaf block and machine appliquéd pumpkins, while the Christmas has trees and a beautiful 8-pointed star. Both quilts have a wonderful country feel that will always remind you of the weekend spent “Quilting in Vermont”.
"Quilting Retreat (No Teacher)"
This modestly No Teacher Retreat is especially designed to bring you to the Strong House Inn and experience an extraordinary weekend of quilting. Our spacious Quilt Room offers cutting stations, ironing stations, excellent natural lighting and night lighting for those all-night sewing marathons.
Quilt Retreat includes: 3 nights, 3 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 afternoon teas and your sewing room set-up.
"Quilting Retreat (No Teacher)"
(same description as above)
Quilt Retreat includes: 3 nights, 3 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 afternoon teas and your sewing room set-up.
"Quilting Retreat (No Teacher)"
Spend five glorious days working on those projects started long ago, but have set aside for some future time. This is your week to make new friends, mentor each other and just enjoy this precious time quilting on your own projects . A side trip to a nearby quilt shop or two will break up the sewing. You can also indulge in a manicure, pedicure or massage at the Inn, which will simply make your stay a complete experience. The food, fun, fellowship and finishing are sure to have you feeling quite fulfilled by the end of the week.
Quilt Retreat includes: 5 nights lodging, 5 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 4 afternoon teas and your sewing room set-up.
"Let's Play with Chenille"
Learn to create a fuzzy texture with three layers of cotton flannel fabric and turn it into a cuddly baby/crib blanket in a weekend. This technique can also be used to make a warm scarf, a vest or a jacket. A basic sewing machine with a walking foot, a blunt tipped, sharp scissor and a free spirit are the most important tools needed to accomplish this lovely blanket. It's fun, fast and satisfying, a project without corners to match, or "fussy cutting" to be done. The perfect weekend project with lots of fun.. All levels
"Lady in the White House"
A quilt from my collection was used to inspire this design - Lady in the White House; a block supposedly named for Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1930’s in a Nancy Page newspaper column. The block design creates a wonderful secondary block that enhances the design. “Nancy Page” – who was she? A short history of her involvement in the quilt world during the early 20th c will begin our journey in creating this patriotic inspired quilt.
"Crazy Quilting and Embellishing"
Bring a project you are working on to get ideas about completing. If you have questions about embroidery, beading, embellishing or silk ribbon embroidery, this will be the weekend to get them answered. Jane shares a variety of her quilts for inspiration and will give demonstrations throughout the weekend. You do not need to be a quilter to enjoy this special retreat. The embellishing ideas can be used on clothing, purses, pictures and other projects.
Journal Quilting
Enter a new world – the world of Journal Quilting and take either those first few steps into Art Quilts or use traditional methods to express your thoughts, a theme or memories into 8 ½ x 11 inch quilt statements! Learn new – and use old – techniques in a fun filled weekend of exploring and producing little quilts – not miniature quilts - that ‘say what you want them to say”. We’ll explore old and learn new background techniques, quilting options, play with embellishment ideas and use appliqué and piecing to enhance these ‘little gems’! It’s exciting, enriching and, above all, a lot of fun!
Appliqué Landscapes and Underwater Magic
Let your spirit be free and join us in making Landscapes in Cotton…Layering for Space.
Landscapes from simple to advance can be created by learning to layer fabric. Instead of piecing with patterns, enjoy free-cutting and building simple shapes using theories of perspective to suggest landscapes with illusions of space and distance, light effects and glowing color.
And then, we can play with Underwater Magic and Fantasy Fish…Join us in an artistic fun filled class.
"Hop to it with Bon Appliqué"
Jump into a delightful collection of applique blocks by Edyta Sitar in her charming book Hop To It. Beginning with this simple design, perfect for learning (or developing) hand applique needle turn technique, enjoy a creative process that will inspire you to stitch with convidence and pleasure. All tricks will be explored to help you achieve smooth curves, sharp points and perfect circles with tips on how to design your own block to compliment this collection. Come, relax and take the A (for anxiety!) out of applique.
“It’s A Posey Party – And You’re Invited”
We’re having a Garden Party and everyone’s invited! This is a fun filled weekend for members of “Florrie’s Gardening Club”, (www.hooplapatterns.com) but we’re not exclusive and anyone who loves a quilting party is very welcome!
Different techniques for hand appliqué will be demonstrated along with a mini lesson on hand piecing. You can design your own “Florrie’s Posey Quilt” shown or work on your own project. An opportunity for creating a Spool Box will also be available.
But that’s not all! Friday night, Froncie will be giving her lecture, “Florrie: The Story of Florence Peto”, which sneaks a glimpse into the life of this prolific and important needleworker. As a special treat, enjoy the Peto memorabilia that Froncie has amassed over the years. This evening will truly be a journey through history.
Saturday will be the Garden Party with an English Tea and spectacular food served at 4:00 and prizes given for the best-dressed tea party costume. Remember your costume jewelry! The weekend will also include fabric and recipe exchanges, show and tell, and a wine reception!
Join Froncie and share in her enthusiasm for hand work, learn Florence Peto history and meet lovely quilters from all over. The Strong House Inn will pamper you and the scenery will astound you.
Quilt Retreat includes: 2 nights lodging, 2 breakfasts, Friday night wine reception, Saturday lunch and 4 p.m. High Tea, sewing room set-up and teacher fee. (Dinners on your own.)
"Royal Radiance"
(includes 5 nights lodging, 5 breakfasts, 4 lunches, 4 afternoon teas, sewing room set-up and teacher fee)
We will use the Royal Radiance Quilt to learn the entire process of choosing your fabrics, cutting them efficiently, organizing your sewing and completing your quilt top. Although we are using this quilt to learn the process, throughout the week, I will share lots of tidbits of information to add to your enjoyment of foundation paper piecing.
*All-inclusive Weekends include:
2 nights lodging, 2 breakfast, 1 lunch, 2 dinners, afternoon tea and your sewing room set-up and quilt teacher.
